Yiwu's permanent population increased by 15,000 in 2023, reaching 1.9 million. This makes it the most populous county-level city in Jinhua.

The population growth also reflected the city’s economic growth, as it achieved a regional GDP of 205.56 billion yuan ($28.55 billion).

This economic growth can be attributed to the city's status as the world capital of small commodities and its strong entrepreneurial environment.

Over the past 10 years, the number of market operators in Yiwu has increased from 170,000 to over 1.06 million. Its e-commerce development has also made remarkable achievements. In 2023, it added more than 188,000 e-commerce entities, a year-on-year increase of 49.8 percent.

Yiwu also strives to retain talent by optimizing its business environment and implementing talent service policies. In 2023, Yiwu introduced 46,500 college graduates, who contributed to the city’s high-quality development.

Yiwu also focuses on the education of children and has invested 12.1 billion yuan in primary and secondary schools and kindergartens since 2016, building more than 2.66 million square meters of school buildings and more than 182 schools.

Yiwu's urbanization rate had reached 81.6 percent by the end of 2023, thanks to the implementation of the urban-rural integration action.
