As the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar continues in the minds of worldwide football fans, World Cup-related merchandise made by Chinese companies has seen a boom in sales and is gaining in popularity among overseas consumers.
Over the past two months, products made in Yiwu, China's small commodity hub, have enjoyed a nearly 70-percent market share of World Cup merchandise. Chinese cross-border merchants represented by Yiwu merchants have sold more than 10 million World Cup-related products through AliExpress, Alibaba Group's business-to-customer platform.
Statistics from AliExpress show that sales of toys, small commodities, national flags, uniforms and other soccer-related products displayed in its special shopping area for the World Cup continue to boom.
In the Middle East, where the World Cup was held, sales of "Made in China" footballs, national flags, and jerseys and sneakers increased by 120 percent, 300 percent and 200 percent yearly, respectively.
Before the finals, searches for World-Cup products related to Argentina and France increased by 85 percent and 92 percent month-on-month, respectively.
In addition, many people chose to watch this year's World Cup via VR glasses and projectors. From September to November this year, sales of projectors sold by AliExpress in the Middle East increased by 120 percent year-on-year. In addition, sales of beanbag chairs surged by 800 percent yearly.
