The opening of Yiwu's trade market will be celebrated on Sept 5 every year, according to a decision made during the fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 16th Yiwu Municipal People's Congress on Sept 21.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Yiwu’s wholesale market of daily commodities.

Yiwu's trade market began to take shape on Sept 5, 1982, when the Huqingmen Small Commodity Market was approved by the local government.

The 4,252-square-meter Huqingmen Small Commodity Market was home to 705 booths with more than 800 merchants and over 2,100 kinds of commodities. The sales of the market totaled 9.8 million yuan ($1.37 million) in the year it opened.

Since 1982 the market has moved six times, expanded 10 times and undergone five upgrades.

In 2005, it was recognized by authoritative world organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank as the world's largest supermarket for daily commodities.

By the end of 2021, the business area of Yiwu China Commodity City reached 6.4 million square meters, with 75,000 booths and an annual turnover of 186.68 billion yuan.
