A grand traditional Chinese wedding ceremony was held for 10 couples in different periods of marriage in Yiwu, East China's Zhejiang province, on July 8, offering a unique opportunity for locals to experience traditional Chinese customs.

One couple attending the special wedding ceremony had been married for 50 years. The husband, surnamed Ye, still got excited seeing his wife wearing a red dress with fine makeup.

Yiwu has been working to reform wedding customs in recent years, aiming to curb extravagance and waste in marriage practices and encouraging simple and civilized wedding conventions.

During this time, some traditional wedding practices adopted by Chinese people have been reduced, including expensive betrothal gifts from the bridegroom to the bride's family, extravagance and waste in wedding receptions, and vulgar behavior that aims to make fun of newlyweds, the department said.

The city is expected to establish new wedding customs that are healthy, civilized, simple and appropriate, while keeping some good traditions.
