Yiwu advocates greener express delivery

Singles' Day in China is an online shopping festival that falls on Nov 11 every year.

Yiwu, a county-level city in East China's Zhejiang province, is often dubbed "the world's supermarket" as it is home to the world's largest wholesale market for small commodities. Unsurprisingly, a significant proportion of consumer products purchased during the spending spree are shipped from Yiwu. According to the latest statistics, the city sent out around 320 million express delivery parcels from Nov 1 to 10.

In response to the national call to reduce carbon emissions, Yiwu has stepped up efforts to promote sustainability measures in its express delivery sector this year. The city currently runs 176 green express delivery outlets, according to an official at the Yiwu postal administration.

In July, the Yiwu government introduced new rules regarding the adoption of greener packages for express delivery. According to these rules, the use of heavy metals, one-off plastic tapes above a certain width, and one-off plastic woven bags have been banned. The authorities have instead promoted the use of light, durable, tape-free cartons, and mandated the installment of recycling facilities in express delivery outlets, retail sites, and residential communities.
