Yiwu in East China's Zhejiang province was appointed as a new member of the World Council and Executive Bureau under the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) in Makati, Philippines on Sept 6.

The appointment will be officially announced in November, and will take effect from 2019 to 2022.

To make the member list, the city of Yiwu came on top after competing with 36 other World Council applicants and 27 Executive Bureau applicants.

The appointment means Yiwu, who joined the organization in 2017, will have more say and businesses in the UCLG, which will increase the city's international influence and bring in worldwide government resources.

Established in Paris in 2004, the UCLG has enrolled over 1,000 member cities from 140 countries.
