Yiwu's garbage sorting campaign is turning more and more waste into electricity, powering residents' air conditioners and other home appliances, local media reported on July 19.

Every day, the city produces over 2,800 tons of household garbage, most of which will be sorted and transported to a power plant located in Southern Yiwu's Chi'an town.

With its fourth incinerator group put into operation in June, the plant is capable of disposing of 3,000 tons of sorted waste and generating 1.6 million kWh of electricity daily.

"The best thing about garbage sorting is that it makes power generation much more efficient," said Zhang Tao, an energy professional who participated in upgrading the Chi'an power plant.

In Yiwu, garbage sorting regulations have been implemented in all public areas and 290 communities. At some of the pilot communities, the classification accuracy is over 85 percent.
