James Kimonyo, Rwandan ambassador to China, visits Yiwu in Zhejiang province on Dec 4.

The ambassador was welcomed by Ge Qiaoli, vice-mayor of Yiwu.

Ge spoke of the newly built digital trade hub in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, hoping more exchanges between Yiwu and Rwanda can help promote the project.

The hub is under the auspices of the electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), an initiative proposed by Alibaba in 2016 to facilitate cross-border trade among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the aid of payments and logistical technologies.

Rwanda is the first African country to launch the platform, while Yiwu is the first Chinese city to do so.

The vice-mayor called on young entrepreneurs from Rwanda to sign up for Yiwu's Global Youth Business Program and invited Rwanda's SMEs to attend Yiwu's international fairs and conferences.

The Rwandan ambassador described the city as a global center for the sales of small commodities and raised suggestions for broader and deeper cooperation in economy, culture, and tourism.
